WHY WEIGH THE WASTE?
Every year in the U.S. we generate more than 14 million tons of food waste – much of it discarded directly from our plates. The Natural Resources Defense Council reports that on average, diners leave 17 percent of their meals uneaten.
HOW CAN YOU HELP TIP THE SCALES?
* Fill your plate mindfully. Take only what you know you can eat.
* Ask for adjusted portions and be precise. Instead of “a little” ask for “one scoop” or “the smallest piece.”
* Pour only what you plan to drink. Beverages such as coffee and tea are especially energy intensive to produce and ship.
